How to Fix Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Steering Wheel

Here is a quick overview of how to replace a steering wheel on the Little Tikes Cozy Coupes.  For the purposes of this post, I am using a 1990s Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. I will add measurements in the future to be sure that this can be used for other car replacments.

The basic set-up is simple. There is the steering wheel, a washer, and a steering wheel clip. All your car needs is the right size of hole, both in diameter, and in depth. I am pretty sure you could modify the replacement parts to fit different dimensions though. That will have to wait for another post. 🙂

So the steering wheel clip slides into the bottom of the steering wheel, with the “Y” end up. Push it up until the clip ends pop out of the holes in the tube.

Put the steering wheel into the hole, and underneath, before it goes through the other side, hold the washer on the underside of the hole, and thread the washer and the otherside of the hole onto the bottom tube of the steering wheel. The washer will slide upwards and over the two nobs that are expsoed from the steering wheel clip inside the steering wheel. If you need to take it off again, push in the two exposed clips and let the washer slide back down the tube again.

I will get the dimensions and add to this post as soon as I can.

  1. I picked up a cozy coupe at a garage sale and the front wheels just spin around. I couldn’t even push it to my car because th wheels wanted to go sideways! It is older but the wheels seem to be fine and look to be original. Any ideas??

    • It sounds like either the front wire forms are bent, from maybe being run over by a car, or one was replaced, and it was using the wrong side of wire form. If you look at your wireforms they should have an “L” or “R” for left and right stamped into them at the bend below where they connect to the body of the car. IF you find you have two wire forms that are both “R”s then one needs to be replaced. If they are oddly bent, then possibly both need to be replaced. If you take some pictures, and send them to me, I will try to help where I can. Melissa 🙂

  2. I also just got a Cozy Coupe at a thrift store whose wheels go around and around. The steering wheel doesn’t steer, but the horn works. I notice that the wire is loose from where it attaches to the car. Can you please give me some help? Thanks

    • I am thinking that is a newer coupe, which I don’t have any experience with. The older ones are just plastic parts that push into the car and clip to stay in. I know there was one where the steering wheel had lots of buttons, and electronic components. Could you take a picture of it, so I might see what I can do to help you? Melissa 🙂

    • I have made some stickers for the center of the horn. It all depends on how much of it is missing, or if it just doesn’t work anymore. What model did you have?
      Melissa 🙂

  3. Just acquired an old Little Tikes car. Missing the steering wheel completely. Wheels work great. I called customer service and they say the new steering wheel won’t fit my old model. Is it worth ordering and trying to figure out? Did you ever get measurements? I can’t find a model number on mine but it’s teal, with a yellow top and magenta back trunk. Pretty sure it’s old… any help is appreciated!

    • I have the feeling that they just say that to everyone because it is way too hard to say for sure if something will work. It is difficult to say for sure. If you can still order the 30th-anniversary cozy coupe steering wheel or the Cozy Truck steering wheel, I know those fit the older cars. I am also quite sure you could make it work with a little “MacGyvering”, either by cutting it shorter, drilling a new hole for the Y clips, or even adding on to the tube of the steering wheel. I will definitely add to this post soon. Melissa 🙂

    • Hello, no, you won’t need to return it. The steering wheel is a little tricky to put on. The “Y” clip needs to be inside, and the “O” ring slides up it and clips into place. If you try to slide the O ring on the steering wheel before putting it on the car, you can see how it will clip into place. So then you can push in the two protruding ends on the “Y”, and remove the O ring. Then you slide the steering wheel into the body of the car, with the Y slip inside the steering wheel, and you slip the O ring underneath on the other side of the car body, through the steering wheel until it clips with the Y clip. It sounds harder than it is. I will try to make a video to help with this. Melissa 🙂

    • I think most of the steering wheels should fit. I haven’t had enough time to measure them all, but from what I have seen, they all seem to have the same dimensions. Basically you need that long tube coming out the bottom to thread through the body of the cozy coupe, and the “Y” clip, and the “O” ring. They may have newer designs where it is all in one, but the basic idea seems to stay the same. If you go to a toy store, try to look at the newest model and see what the steering wheel looks like. Melissa 🙂

  4. How do I remove the horn to replace it please? There seem to be three more plastic clip things but I can’t push them back in?

  5. Hi! Put the cozy Coupe together for Christmas. All worked great! In July my daughter pulled the steering wheel completely out and it has not been the same since. I can reinstall the steering wheel- as you described in other posts but it does not control the Front wheels any longer. Any suggestions?
